About the event

WELCOME TO REAL DE CATORCE & WIRIKUTA

WIRIKUTA is the sacred land where it all began for the Wirarika, also known as Huichol Indians. In this immersive journey, we will delve into the enchanting desert environment while uncovering the profound challenges faced by these indigenous communities in their unwavering quest to protect their sacred homeland. Along the way, we will savor the rich offerings of local chefs and their artisanal products, forging a deeper connection to the land and its people.

Our adventure takes place in Real de Catorce, a former mining ghost town high in the mountains of northern Mexico which is now a pilgrimage site and a place of immense spiritual significance. Here, we will spend days in serene contemplation, immersing ourselves in the magic of this ancient landscape.

As you step into Real de Catorce, you'll find yourself transported to a bygone era, where cobblestone streets wind through centuries-old buildings, and the spirit of the past mingles with the present. Here, amidst the dramatic landscapes and the echoes of indigenous Huichol culture, you'll embark on a journey of self-discovery, rejuvenation, and connection with the profound energies that flow through this extraordinary place. Real de Catorce is not just a destination; it's a portal to a world of inner exploration and transformation, making it the ideal setting for Deep Inside the Desert.

EXPERIENCE OVERVIEW

Upon arrival, we will check in at the emblematic Mesón de la Abundancia, a charming abode that sets the stage for our unforgettable journey. A warm welcome dinner awaits us at the Centro Cultural Real de Catorce, offering a taste of local flavors and culture, before we retire for a well-deserved rest to prepare for the next days desert experience.

The next morning, after a light and nourishing breakfast, we embark on a thrilling 4X4 adventure, journeying deep into the heart of Wirikuta desert—the sacred realm of the Wirarika culture, also known as the Huichol Indians. These revered guardians of Hikuri, or Peyote, have dedicated themselves to preserving this endangered and mystical cactus.

Our destination is El Venado Azul, a remarkable organization led by a Marakame, a Holy Man, who is on a sacred mission to safeguard this magical plant. Here, we will have the unique opportunity to learn directly from the source—the Marakame himself—about the secrets and spiritual significance of this sacred plant.

Our day unfolds amidst the vastness of the desert, where we will share in the experiences of the Huichol people, deepening our understanding of their culture and the vital role that Hikuri plays in their lives. As the sun dips below the horizon, we will partake in a mesmerizing night in the desert, immersing ourselves in the ancient rhythms of this land.

This journey promises not only adventure but also profound insights into the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Huichol Indians. Join us as we embark on a transformative exploration of Wirikuta, a land where tradition, magic, and conservation converge to create an unforgettable experience.
